According to Kaiser Family Foundation‘s report in 2009, the average Texan over the age of 65 consumed over 33.1 prescription drugs annually. But high drug consumption isn’t just an issue in Texas. Many experts feel that Americans overall are prescribed too many drugs by their doctors with no consideration to the harmful side effects.

According to MSNBC:

“Yet many doctors are quick to prescribe a drug, partly because they have limited time to deal with individual patients or because they and their patients have been bombarded with ads from the pharmaceutical industry.”

Medical schools teach modern doctors to treat their patients’ symptoms and diseases with drugs. After medical school, this process is reinforced by the drug industry. Unfortunately, patients are not exposed to the alternative treatments that are more holistic in approach.

Are you a diabetic that would like to take more control over your health?

The effects of long-term prescription drug use is slowly confirming the fact that some of the drugs on the market today actually do not do what they claim. In fact, some do much more harm that good increasing the risk of heart failure.

Under your doctor’s supervision, the best way to treat diabetes is a simple three-prong system that’s simply but not necessarily easy:  improve your insulin and leptin levels, lose and manage your weight to a normal level, get blood pressure to normal levels:

• Resolve emotional stress or issues

• Get ample vitamin D

• Get enough sleep (8-10 hours night)

• Intake sufficient omega-3 fats

• Avoid trans fats

• Exercise often

• Limit sugar and grains

• Find a nutritional diet
