What Is Sciatica?
What is sciatica? The sciatic nerve stretches from your spinal cord base down to your pelvis, hips, buttocks, legs and all the way down to your feet. When this long nerve becomes inflamed, it can be so painful that a patient will want to seek help for relief.
What a sciatic symptoms? Generally, a patient will only feel the sciatic nerve pain on one side of the body with numbness in some areas and may feel sharp pain in the hip and leg. Another symptom may be a burning sensation or mild tingling. Some instances prevent a patient’s ability to walk.
What are the causes of sciatica? The causes of sciatica - pinched nerve in the lower lumbar region of the back – could be caused by an unexpected event like a car accident. Other causes for sciatica may be due to degenerative disc diseases piriformis muscle spasms and spondylolisthesis. Other common origins leading to sciatic nerve pain are:
• Excess weight
• Poor posture
• Herniated or ruptured disks pressing on the nerve roots
• Vertebral abnormalities
• Bone spurs
• Pregnancy
• Tumors
At Dallas Natural Doctor, Dr. Jade Malay, Plano chiropractor, offers her patients treatment for this musculoskeletal and nervous system disorder by providing a non-surgical method. What Makes Spinal Decompression Successful?
Spinal decompression is a non-surgical treatment performed on a machine (the DRX9000) that takes the stress off of injured areas of the back or neck. By relieving the disks or areas of pressure, the nerves that cause pain are released. Certain conditions present the best opportunity for help with the DRX9000:
- Herniated & bulging discs
- Degenerative discs
- Sciatica & leg pain
- Arthritis (depends on the location)
- Headaches
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Tendonitis & bursitis
But even if you have one of the above conditions, other factors are important to getting the full effect of the treatment for spinal decompression. For example, overall health and age need to be considered prior to treatment. Sufferers of back pain can also participate in the healing process through improving diet, increasing water consumption, exercise, better sleeping postures, ceasing use of tobacco, narcotics or steroids and having a positive general attitude regarding treatment.
When you’re on board in the process of healing from spinal decompression, the DRX9000 machine works gently over a series of treatments to restore your physical problem. Based on a protocol developed for your specific situation, you either stand or lie down on a table connected to the machine. A harness holds your affected area steady, while the machine gently eases the tension through a gentle stretch. A typical treatment is 30-45 minutes, and you may need 20-30 sessions. The work must be done over time to be fully effective. Otherwise, the body would ‘spring back’ into the existing way of being. The number of sessions is determined by consultation about your specific issue. Each person is slightly different.
Certain issues will disqualify your eligibility for spinal decompression. For example:
- Spinal fusion or cement work
- Hardware in your back such as screws or plates
- Severe osteoporosis
- Severe scoliosis
- Presence of cancer
- Pregnancy

Chiropractic Wellness Center – Plano / Dallas
Dr. Jade Malay has been helping patients alleviate their low back pain at her chiropractic wellness center located in Plano, Texas since 1992. Her qualifications include a Doctorate of Chiropractic degree from Parker College of Chiropractic.
Dr. Malay says that, “When a patient comes to our office complaining of low back pain, it is a challenge to determine exactly where the pain originates. We begin our evaluation by reviewing their overall health history and then initiate our exam to determine how the pain is generated. Damaged or injured tissues may be a root cause but this does not give us a full picture of the potential issues. We will identify if there is a severe condition: neurological, infection, a fracture or even cancer. Nerve root compression is a very common complaint caused by herniated disks causing pinched nerve roots. In some cases, depending on the symptoms, we would refer you to a specialist.”
Often low back pain is a result of too much lifting or twisting causing the tearing or stretching of the facet joint. The effect can be mild to severe low back pain emitting from the back, down the buttocks and down into the thigh. Mistakenly patients may believe they are experiencing sciatica pain. However, we will be able to identify the true root of the problem and provide you with the best care for your low back pain.
Please share this if you feel it is beneficial for you or someone you care about. Contact our chiropractic wellness center today for an evaluation and to begin your recovery from low back pain.
Spine Compression – Sciatica
A common form of spine compression is sciatica. The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that extends from the lower back to the bac
k of both legs and commonly affects one side of the lower body. A few signs of sciatica are:
- Difficulty moving the leg or feet accompanied by weakness and numbness
- Tingling or burning sensations down either leg
- Consistent pain on either buttock
- Difficulty standing up caused by a shooting pain
- Pain in the rear or leg(s) that becomes worse when sitting
Some people experience infrequent yet annoying back pain. Unfortunately, others suffer from acute to debilitating sciatic back pain. One cause of sciatica is when the lower lumbar and lumbosacral spine are irritated. Other causes are spondylolisthesis (where one vertebra slips forward over the other), lumbar spinal stenosis (where the spinal canal in the lower back becomes narrow), degenerative disc disease (where there is a breakdown of the discs) and finally, pregnancy.
Ways to minimize sciatica should include maintaining good posture, assuring the lower back has the appropriate support when sitting and avoiding long periods of sitting or standing.
Likely sciatica will get better on its own within a few days or weeks. Sufferers that experience pain that seems to worsen over time may need to include an exercise routine that includes a form of physical therapy. For those that feel they need more intense treatments may find relief with nonsurgical spinal decompression. To experience a more active lifestyle, free from sciatica, call our office today for an assessment of your condition.
Testing For Back Pain
Medical Evaluation and Diagnostic Testing procedures should be performed prior to beginning any treatment in order to determine the treatment process that will be most effective. The following describes some of the evaluation testing procedures that can be performed to help confirm the cause of back pain.
The causes of back pain can be very complex, and there are many structures in the lower back that can cause pain. The following are used to test for the cause pain:
- X-RAYS – An X-Ray provides an image that can be used to evaluate bones, joints and degenerative lesions in the spine.
- CAT SCAN (CT) – Used primarily when problems are suspected in the bones or when a patient can?t obtain an MRI.
- MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI) The most common test to evaluate the lumbar spine. Evaluates:
- Vertebral bones
- Discs
- Joints
- Nerves
- Soft tissues
- MYELOGRAM – where dye is injected into the spinal column and then the area is flexed and x-rayed.
- DISCOGRAPHY – Discography is a diagnostic procedure used to determine the level of the painful disc.
- EMG – The EMG/Nerve Conduction Study is a useful test to study the nerves in the arms and legs.
- BONE DENSITY – Bone density testing is fast, painless, and noninvasive. During a test, patients lie fully clothed on a padded treatment table while the machine scans one or more areas of bone. The entire test normally takes only minutes.
- BONE SCAN – A Bone scan in Nuclear Medicine is a procedure which involves two steps:
The patient is asked to arrive 3 hours before their actual scan to receive an injection of a small amount of radioactive tracer that is “tagged” to a calcium like material. Usually the tracer is injected in a vein in the arm of the patient. In some instances, other sites of injection are used especially for those patients that had difficult veins to find. The “radiopharmaceutical” has no side effects and because of this, the patient can be released from the department for 3 hours to give the calcium time to circulate and be taken up by the bone. There are no dietary restrictions so the patient may eat before and after the injection.
After the three hours has elapsed, the patient returns to the Nuclear Medicine department for their scan. The patient is placed on a table a head to toe scan is performed by a “gamma camera”.
