Even if you don’t consume much sugar, you could be at risk for type 2 diabetes due to the amount of food you eat. Those extra calories will convert to fat making you at risk for diabetes. This is why it is important to watch the quality and quantity of the foods you eat. However, weight is just one risk factor of diabetes. Other factors are if you:
-
Have family members that are diabetics;
-
Are a member of ethnic groups known to have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes: Hispanic/Latino heritage, Pacific Islander, Asian-American, African American and American Indian;
-
Are a woman who had gestational diabetes or birthed a baby that weighed over 9 pounds;
-
Someone with high blood pressure and/or HDL cholesterol below 35 mg or triglyceride levels above 250 mg;
-
Have a low exercise regimene of less than three times weekly.
Although there is no real cure for type 2 diabetes, you can take measures to keep your blood sugar under control.
